Rich in heritage

THE Temple of Fine Arts (TFA) will be showcasing different styles of Indian dance and music in Kaadambari: A Showcase of the Glorious Heritage of Indian Dance and Music. Performed by 70 dancers and musicians who will be dressed in more than 100 colourful costumes and 300 pieces of costume jewellery, the event is a must-see for dance lovers.
Art lovers can feast their senses on classical dance forms including the bharatanatyam, kuchipudi, odissi and kathak.
Highlights include TFA’s opening dance Premanjali, a tribal Bhill dance, a medley of musical styles Pancha Rang and contemporary folk piece Call of the Desert.
Premanjali features 14 senior dancers, illuminated by 20 young talents holding deepams (lamps). In the music section, Pancha Rang will present an ensemble of versatile musical talents – vocal, violin, veena, mrdangam, sitar, tabla and piano – in a medley of songs ranging from Carnatic and Hindustani to western and contemporary.

The performance takes place at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, KLCC this Saturday (8.30pm) and Sunday (3pm). The orchestra will perform under the baton of Bernard Labadie, a leading conductor of baroque and classical repertoire. In these showcases, the MPO will collaborate with Scottish soprano Lisa Milne, who has performed at the Metropolitan Opera of New York, English National Opera and Welsh National Opera.

■ INNER Voices Productions’ Let’s Go Mamak ... Again will be staged till tomorrow at Pentas 1, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) at Jalan Strachan in Kuala Lumpur. The concert is a re-staging of last year’s successful show which bagged four BOH Cameronian Arts Awards.
The performance features different cultures and the concept of harmony displayed at a mamak stall. Music director Ken Hor leads 12 musicians in exploring the flavour of contemporary ethnic Malaysian music. Leading the cast are Julian Chan, Fung Chern Hwei, Prakash Kandasamy and Jimmy Ch’ng.

■ TEATER Perdana Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka’s Intan yang Tercanai takes centrestage at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Jalan Dewan Bahasa in KL from July 8 to 12 (8.30pm). Written by Datuk Noordin Hassan and directed by A. Wahab Hamzah, the play is about how religious girl Intan Anis faces challenges in life. ■ CLASSICAL tidings will take No Black Tie in KL by storm on July 7 when tenor Yap Jin Hin and soprano Jane Soong take to the stage. Yap is a voice graduate from the United States, where he has performed numerous concerts.
He obtained his Master of Music (Voice) from Louisiana State University (LSU) in May. From the studio of Robert Grayson, he has performed the Male Chorus in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, Alfredo in La traviata, Ferrando in Cos? fan tutte, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Father of Confessor in Dialogues of the Carmelites and Schmidt in Werther with the LSU Opera.
He is also a recipient of the Paul Groves Voice Scholarship, Francis Greer Voice Scholarship, the Baton Rouge Opera Guild Career Grant and the Baton Rouge Music Club Scholarship.
Soong, on the other hand, did her undergraduate studies at Universiti Malaya, and will be pursuing her graduate studies in the United Statesnext month.
In 2006, she won third place at the National Classical Songs Singing Competition. As a member of Dithyrambic singers, she has participated in many performances with the choir, notably the Busan Choral Festival and Competition in South Korea last year, where the choir became overall champion. In April 2009, she gave a recital at the DBKL Auditorium. She will be pursuing her graduate studies at Louisiana State University, the United States.

■ A host of the nation’s artistes, including the likes of Zainal Abidin, Jaclyn Victor and Juwita Suwito, will be performing at the Hand in Hand with the Stars concert at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), from tomorrow till Sunday.
The three singers, along with percussion outfits Hands Percussion and Aseana Percussion Unit, will take to the stage for a benefit show to raise funds for the Parents’ Resource for Autism (PR4A) movement.
