Evening of classics
HSBC Classics Festival Of Rising Stars 2009 takes place until Saturday at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre in Jalan Strachan, KL.
The event features a solo recital by HSBC classics piano competition 2008 winner Wong Shuenda who performs J.S. Bach’s Prelude And Fugue In F Sharp Minor, Franz Schubert’s 2 Impromptus From D.935 and Franz Liszt’s Spanish Rhapsody. There’s also a chamber concert by Loo Bang Hean (piano), Yap Ling (violin) and Jonathan Oh (cello). They perform Gabriel Fauré’s Sicilienne, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Sonata In G Minor and Johannes Brahms’ Scherzo In C Minor.
The highlight is an East-meets-West concert featuring Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and the traditional Chinese piece, Yellow River Piano Concerto.
Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is performed by four talented string soloists – Wong Lu Ee, Gerald Ng, Liuyi Retallick and Lau Yew Hann. Oh Yann Shie performs Yellow River Piano Concerto.
There will be a viola workshop (Saturday, 11am) by violinist Andrew Filmer and string ensemble workshop (Saturday, 3pm) by violinist Eprodito Bartolome and admission is free.

GET ready for some Mumbai masala with Merchants Of Bollywood, being staged now till July 26 at Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur.
Having just ended a five-year international tour that included stops like Germany, Switzerland and Australia, the musical is set to entertain the Malaysian audience with songs and dances. It is also the group’s only stop in Asia, in conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur Festival.
The song-and-dance extravaganza features 40 dancers who boogie non-stop to 48 songs taken from Bollywood movies such as Bunty Aur Babli, Dhoom 2, Dostana, Rang De Basanti and Salam Namaste.
Apart from catchy musical numbers, the 90-minute musical also features 1,200 costumes and 2,500 pieces of jewellery worn by the cast.
The musical is adapted from renowned Bollywood choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant’s life, revolving around her dreams and determination to become a dancer despite her family’s objections. It tells the story of the fictional Ayesha Merchant, the granddaughter of a renowned Bollywood choreographer, Shantilal Merchant.

FENOMENA Seni Pentas will be staging an autobiographical play, Swami Satyananda, which is about Pure Life Society founder Swami Satyananda. The play is a tribute to the visionary man who dedicated his life to the well-being of orphans. The play will be staged this Saturday (8.30pm) at PJ Civic Hall, Section 7 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. SINCE 2003, singer Dayang Nurfaizah has been celebrating her birthday with fans. To mark her 28th birthday, Dayang takes centrestage at Hard Rock Café at Jalan Sultan Ismail, KL, on Sunday at 11pm.

KALPANA Paranjothy’s sitar recital Kalpana Dreams takes place this Saturday and Sunday at 7.30pm at Auditorium Memorial Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Arkib Negara Malaysia, Jalan Dato Onn, KL.
Kalpana, who trained under sitar maestro Ustad Usman Khan, weaves her heartsong out of the classics and knowledge of Hindustani music featuring Raag Yaman, Bagheshree and Bhoopeshree. Accompanied by Prakash Kandasamy on the tabla, she promises an evening of music for the soul.

THE Sixth Johor Bahru Arts Festival 2009 takes centrestage till July 28 at Festival Village at Kotaraya in Johor Baru, Johor.
