Chinese opera revival
Compiled by SHEELA CHANDRAN
AFTER the success of Mak Yong Titis Sakti, The Actors Studio Teater Rakyat is back with another exciting production about the world of Cantonese opera.
The Actors Studio through its Teater Rakyat programme attempts to revive the glorious days of Cantonese opera and at the same time open it up to a wider audience.
It will be bringing to life excerpts from three well-known Chinese classics – Dream Of The Red Chamber’s Reunion In The Dream, The Mirror Reunion’s Seducing The General and General Dik Ching’s In Pursuit Of The General. Although it will be performed in Cantonese, there will be a brief introduction to each piece in English and Cantonese so that first-timers can follow the story.
Presented under the banner title A Night Of Cantonese Opera, the performance will be held from Nov 13 to 15 at Pentas 2, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac), Sentul Park, Jalan Strachan, Kuala Lumpur.
It is directed by Kam Sin Kiew, a Hong Kong native who is actively involved with the Jade Leaf Association, Kuala Lumpur Kwang Tung Association and Yue Jin Cantonese Opera Club. She also shares her long-time experience by teaching and nurturing young talents.
Tickets are priced at RM30 or RM18 (students, seniors and the disabled). For details, call 03-4047 9000 or browse klpac.com.
