Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel

Artist: MARIAH CAREY

Genre: Pop

(Island/Universal)

Reviewer: JO TIMBUONG

WE all know that Mariah Carey’s career has had its ups and downs. But she has picked herself up lately and released amazing albums like the Emancipation of Mimi and E=MC². Everyone’s favourite diva has indeed got her groove back ... and that is why I was looking forward to another wonderful release.

As it turns out ... this is good, but not her best. Honestly, I miss the old Mariah Carey who ruled the 1990s. The belts and how she uses her honey-sweet voice to its optimum made listening to her albums a joy. That’s what’s missing from this album. There are a few good tracks, but also times when it gets really monotonous.

Of course by now everybody’s heard Obsessed which is supposed to take the mickey out of Eminem – he who is famous for dissing every diva known to man, from the Spice Girls to Jessica Simpson. I liked the cheekiness of this song so it’s no surprise that I’m obsessed with it myself. Angel’s Cry is another good, albeit melancholic track which calls to mind cuts from her album Butterfly.

I’m not as impressed, though, with the current single – a cover of Foreigner’s I Wanna Know What Love Is. I believe she could have done a better rendition with a voice like hers. This album does not have the punch that I expected it to have. But even angels have been known to have flaws. I’m glad this angel isn’t afraid to admit it.
