FOR someone who did not read the Stephanie Meyer novel Twilight, I actually thought the movie was pretty good ... until I watched it for the second time and had the chance to observe whether the soundtrack fits in well with the movie itself.
A few do, such as Full Moon by The Black Ghosts and Eyes on Fire by Danish electronic group Blue Foundation. A more specific example is Iron & Wine’s Flightless Bird, American Mouth, which provides near-perfect background music for a very meaningful scene. It is also interesting to see Mute Math, a lesser-known band in these parts, contribute to the soundtrack.
Instrumental piece Bella’s Lullaby, composed by Carter Burwell, also does justice, with a fine touch of dissonance in the main melody of the piano. I was particularly relieved when I listened to the lead single Decode by American rock band Paramore. Decode is admittedly one of its better songs, with the lyrics fitting well with the story too.
However, there are a few songs that seem to be here to merely make up the numbers. Among them is Collective Soul’s extremely draggy Tremble for My Beloved.
Main actor Robert Pattinson has a sort of Damien Rice-inspired track, Never Think, included too. I was sorely disappointed with Pattinson’s diction, as there was barely anything I could make out throughout.
Personally, it felt as if the overall compilation somehow lacks a real seriousness to it. All in all, nothing too special here.
